Stranded Climbers on Matterhorn Peak — Saturday, September 26th, 2026, 26-488, Op #51
On Saturday, September 26th at 1956 hours, the Team was called to assist two climbers stranded off-route on the Double Dihedral route on Matterhorn Peak. Both were uninjured and located on a large ledge, but reported being cold and unable to continue. They requested helicopter extraction and stated that spending the night out was not an option, however, without further elaboration..
Three team members departed Rescue Base at Mono Village early Sunday morning with technical rescue equipment. After approaching the subjects, the field team determined that the situation was more serious than initially reported, largely due to medical information that was unknown/withheld to the rescue teams. Helicopter support was considered, but gusty winds and spontaneous rockfall presented additional hazards. As the field team moved into position, they developed a plan to complete the rescue without air support.
Two team members climbed to a position below the subjects and established a controlled rappel, providing a fireman's belay as both climbers descended to safety. The team then escorted the subjects out to Base.
The incident highlighted the importance of accurately communicating medical concerns, equipment capabilities, and the circumstances leading to a climber's inability to continue.
Although the subjects initially reported no medical issues, one was later identified as a Type 1 diabetic with limited insulin remaining. Earlier disclosure of this information may have affected resource allocation and operational decision-making.
The operation was concluded at 2015 hours, Sunday, September 27th.
